Green Hump is my reflection on place and memory, rooted in my family’s connection to a site on the Isle of Portland in Dorset known as Green Hump. This summer, each time I returned to Portland, where I grew up, I walked the same path I have followed throughout my life with my family to Green Hump. On these walks, I gathered flowers, rocks, and foliage. These items, collected along the familiar paths, were taken into the studio and arranged into still lifes. The same materials were then transformed into a plant-based chemistry used to develop the 8×10 sheet negatives that created the final prints. In this way, the landscape became both subject and medium. In these prints, Green Hump is not only represented but materially present — carrying memory, presence, and trace as a quiet inheritance. The final images were hand-printed in the darkroom using a light-sensitive liquid emulsion coated onto silk.
